Rigging Area at ThePoint

Low Tide at The Point

3.5 Hours after high tide facing WNW

3.5 Hours after high tide facing SSE

The launching area known as “The
Point” on Canvey Island is, as the name suggest the meeting point of
two sea walls. With your back to one you are facing SSE and your
back to the other you are facing WNW. Water is available approx 3
hours either side of high tide,
The venue is mainly used by experienced windsurfers when the wind is
from the N to NE and When venturing further out there are good even
spaced waves/swells for those wave riders.
There is a large green for rigging but parking is restricted to
parking in the adjacent roads /verges.
There is a slope on the inland side and steps on the seaward side to
negotiate. At high tide launching is taken from the sloping sea wall
or the adjacent rock breakwater.
If you intend to sail this area it is advised you visit it at low
water to view the under water hazards of rocks stakes close to the
shore and sand banks further out. These do not promote a problem at
high water (except the breakwater) but as the tide recedes you
should be aware what is beneath you.
There is little to no beach. As the Thames is a lot narrower here
there is a substantial tidal flow great for sailing wind against
tide. A westerly wind against the incoming tide has apparently, due
to the strong current of the Thames the same effect as in the Gorge.
Wind and tide in the same direction should be avoided. Do not sail
this venue on your own as any failure in equipment you will end up
in the shipping channel and if in doubt ask the high standard local
windsurfers for advice.
